School of Stomatology is formerly known as the Department of Stomatology which was founded in 1979 and formally enrolled five-year undergraduate students in the fall. It is one of the earliest medical schools in China to train stomatology undergraduate students. In 2000, it was renamed as School of Stomatology of Kunming Medical University and then the Department of Stomatology of Yunnan Medical College was incorporated into it in 2010.
School of Stomatology & The Affiliated Stomatology Hospital of KMU and Yunnan Provincial Stomatological Hospital has implemented a management system of "three brands and one set of management teams", integrating the following responsibilities: education, scientific research, as well as medical treatment and service.
Stomatology is National Characteristic Specialty and Clinical Stomatology is Yunnan Provincial Key Discipline. Offering the only master’s program in Stomatology in Yunnan, the school began to recruit master students in 1986 and got an authorized academic master’s discipline in 2003.
During the 13th Five-Year plan, Stomatology was awarded as Provincial Brand Specialty, Provincial First-class Specialty, the first Outstanding Doctor Training Project, Provincial Doctoral Construction Discipline, Provincial First-class Discipline and National First-class Undergraduate Program Construction in 2020. In 2021, Stomatology was authorized as academic doctorate discipline and professional doctorate discipline. In 2022, it was awarded Provincial Class A Professional Construction Site. In July 2022, it was approved as Stomatology International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Yunnan Province.
As a high-level stomatology teaching and research base in Yunnan Province, School of Stomatology has 13 teaching and research departments, including Endodontics, Periodontology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Oral Implantology, Orthodontics, Oral Imaging, Pediatric and Oral Prevention, Basic Dentistry, Oral Care, Oral Biology, Oral Medicine Humanities, and Oral General Practice, 1 experimental teaching demonstration center and 1 research institute. It has been approved as National Off-campus Practice Teaching Base for University Students and in 2020 it has been approved as Provincial Key Laboratory of Stomatology.
The school (hospital) has 601 employees, including 62 professional and technical personnel with senior professional title, 14 doctoral supervisors and 42 master’s supervisors. Among 230 doctors, 36 have doctoral degrees and 186 have master's degrees. The number of teachers with master's degrees or above accounts for 97% of the total.
School of Stomatology has built a multi-level talent training system including five-year undergraduate, master's, doctoral, international students and continuing education, and formed its own characteristic talent training mode. At present, it has 601 full-time undergraduates, 176 postgraduate students, 28 doctoral students, 12 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and 2 international students. Since its establishment, it has cultivated more than 2000 graduates of various levels and types.
The school (hospital) takes medical research and education as its mission. During the 13th Five-Year plan period, its scientific research achievements reached a new high. It has successfully applied for 192 scientific research projects (including 12 horizontal projects), including 13 National Natural Science Foundation Projects, 1 National Social Science Foundation Projects, and won 2 first prizes, 1 second prize and 2 third prizes of Yunnan Science and Technology Progress Award. In 2019, the level and number of awards achieved a historic breakthrough since the establishment of the school.
The school (hospital) is equipped with 212 sets of dental chairs and 34 beds, a total of 15 clinical and medical technology departments (Endodontics Periodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Oral Prevention, Dental Implantology, Oral General Department, Temporomandibular Joint Specialist, Oral Cavity Mucosa Department, Special Clinic, Dental Imaging, Disinfection Center, Operating Room) and 5 outpatient departments, forming an oral health care service network in Kunming city. In 2020, it led five municipal hospitals to build Yunnan Provincial Clinical Medical Center for Oral Diseases, and was approved as the Yunnan Provincial Clinical Medical Research Center for Oral Diseases in 2021.
The school(hospital) holds international and domestic academic exchange conferences every year, and has established friendly and cooperative relations with dental colleges in the United States, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries and regions. Over the years, more than 40 teachers have been to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Thailand, Japan and other countries to study. As one of its sponsors, the school joined the Mekong Regional Dental International Collaboration (IDCMR) in 2004 and joined the Southeast Asian Dental Education Association (SEAADE) in 2013, actively participating in the annual academic exchanges and visits in the field of international oral medicine, which has strongly promoted the interactions and cultural exchanges between Yunnan and Southeast Asian countries in scientific research and education of stomatology.
