The Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University was founded in October, 1952, formerly known as Kunming Workers' Hospital. It is a provincial-level comprehensive Grade-A tertiary hospital with outstanding academic strengths, integrating medical services, teaching, scientific research, prevention, health care, treatment of public health emergencies and medical first aid. In 1962, it was renamed the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical College. In 2000, it became the Second School of Clinical Medicine Affiliated to Kunming Medical College concurrently. In 2009 and 2015, it became Yunnan Urology Hospital, Yunnan Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Hospital concurrently. In 2012, it was renamed the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University. In 2021, the Hospital under Yunguang Development Co., Ltd. was included as its branch and renamed as Haikou Hospital under the Second Hospital Affiliated to Kunming Medical University, featuring “one hospital with two campuses”.
At present, the hospital has 2,255 open beds, 80 clinical wards and medical technology departments, and 3 national key clinical specialty construction projects (critical care medicine, urology and neurology). It is one of the first Grade-A tertiary hospitals assessed by the Ministry of Public Health, National Top 100 Hospitals and the member of online hospitals under International Emergency Rescue Center (SOS), one of the first elderly-friendly medical institutions in Yunnan Province and the first advanced stroke center in Yunnan Province awarded by the National Stroke Prevention and Treatment Committee. The hospital is the chair institution of Yunnan Stroke Association, as well as Yunnan Chemical Poisoning Treatment Base. 6 provincial quality control centers are affiliated to the hospital. The number of in-service employees stand at 3472.The hospital has 6second-class disciplinary doctoral degree authorization stations 1 degree authorization station for professional doctoral degrees in clinical medicine and 25master’s degree authorization stations, with 48 doctoral supervisors and 257 master’s supervisors. It has 2 undergraduate programs, Clinical Medicine and Medical Laboratory Technology, with 22 teaching and research sections, in addition to 1 specialized program at national level and 1 specialized program at provincial level. The hospital undertakes clinical teaching and manages the internship of undergraduates, postgraduates and international students from Kunming Medical University. 27 national specialized bases for standardized training of resident physicians,3 national specialized bases for standardized training of specialist physicians,24 academician/expert workstations, 1post-doctoral workstation, as well as4 clinical medical centers (urinary system diseases, hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases, critical medicine and rehabilitation) and 1 clinical medical research center (urinary system diseases) of Yunnan have stationed in the hospital. It has won a special prize of Yunnan Science and Technology Progress Award and 6 first prizes of Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
